As a caregiver, you should absolutely be taking time daily to unwind.

Once you’ve settled things down in your household, you need a precious block of time to settle yourself down.  A great way to do that is  through writing.

Writing Opens Doors for Release

“The act of putting pen to paper encourages pause for thought, this in turn makes us think more deeply about life, which helps us regain our equilibrium.”  ~Norbet Platt

How many days in a week do you experience frustration and just want to scream? Probably more times than you can count right?

Caregiving is a balancing act.  It’s quite easy to feel overwhelmed too — A change in your child’s medication; an unexpected medical bill that isn’t covered by insurance.  Whatever it is, you can use writing to help you relieve stress.

Writing helps you to release your frustrations.  This in turn leads to restoring some of your life’s balance which is what you need to relieve stress.

Weaving Writing Time Into Your Schedule

So what is the perfect time to write?  Definitely not the morning.  You have way too much going on to get your day started.  That is unless you are a serious morning person and can get up before the crack of dawn.  For me that would only cause stress!

If you go to bed and wake up in the morning, your mind is less cluttered.  You won’t have as big a need to write at this time of day.  The evening is the best time to write for caregivers.  That’s because an entire day has passed and you need an outlet to relieve stress.

Commit to carving out as little as 15 minutes at least twice a week in the evenings to write.  Shut off telephones and other electronics.  This is your time to spend uninterrupted.

What Do I Write About?

Now that you know writing is a good way to relieve stress, you may be wondering what you can possibly write about.

For starters, there’s no form or fashion. It doesn’t have to be neat, fancy or even creative.  All you are trying to accomplish by writing is relieving stress.

Here are some things you can write about to release that overwhelm:

  • A comparison between something good and something not so pleasant that happened to you during the day
  • How much you love the people you care for
  • What it would be like to go on a dream vacation
  • A fond childhood memory
  • What it would be like if you were a big time movie producer instead of a caregiver (OK that’s probably my personal fantasy)

With writing, the possibilities are endless.  The ideas I shared are to just get you started. You can also free write.  Remember, no form or fashion. You have one goal and one goal only.  Relieve some stress.

If you have any other ideas that you think would be good to write about, share them in t write at this time of day.  The evening is the best time to write for caregivers.  That’s because an entire day has passed and you need an outlet to relieve stress.
