As kids get older, they tend to think their parents are old, uninformed and certainly uncool.
My 17 year old daughter tells me I’m a nerd. She says I’m weird too. OK. My CJ doesn’t seem to think so but then again he’s 10 functioning like he’s 1!
While a child with special needs won’t likely give you the same feedback on your “nerdiness” as a normally abled child, you will still feel it .
There will come a time when your child will grow up and find his place in the world. Then all your gestures of kisses and hugs will be appreciated in private only.
Now, I’m definitely not the expert on this. I probably shouldn’t even be writing this since I know I am NOT a cool special needs mom. Really, what I’m about to share is how I wish I could be.
If I were though, I’d treat CJ like a big boy in front of his school mates and teachers. For example, if he’s having difficulty with something, a cool mom would let him know, “Next time” and keep it moving without babying him. A not so cool mom (raising hand) would hug him up and carry him away.
A cool mom would also recognize that her little boy is going to like girls some day. She’d give him a little space to grow and learn. Not too much space though!
That’s it. I got nothing else. I guess that’s what’s to be expected from such an uncool mom!
So do you think you’re a cool mom? If so, share with the rest of us how you manage it!

I know my daughter thinks I can be pretty uncool sometimes, she will just look at me like, you have got to be kidding. It is so hard not to baby any child but when a child has any special needs and especially when they have significant needs the temptation too stay an uncool parent is so there!!! They also may not have the same ability to tell us to buzz off, though I’m always impressed that when Lizzy has her lucid moments that is exactly what she does, it’s usually in front of people too!! Lol! Thanks for a great post!
:-0) Hey they will just have to deal with us!
LOL I can only imagine Lizzy telling you to put a sock in it!
Oh she does it very well!! In response to your comment on my site, we do live in New York, but we are on Long Island now. I am planning on going to BlogHer this summer. I went to the BlogHer writing conference in October at the Hilton and it was great!! I won’t buy a ticket till the last possible moment though because I never know what is going to happen!!
Aww I missed it. I missed BlogHer 2 summers ago so I wasn’t going to miss it this year. I got my ticket for this year back in the summer lol
It will be my first time so I can’t wait to meet new people. if you go, we’ll have to meet up!
